Looking back: The fire of 2001
The Dockyard Church fell victim to a devastating fire on 26th November 1881.
The Church was again gutted by a serious fire on 30th May 2001 when the roof and the interior, including the galleries and internal finishes, were lost and the stonework and brick structure were damaged.
The Sheerness Dockyard Preservation Trust have been fortunate to receive the below archive video footage, taken from the interior of the church, prior to the 2001 fire which caused sever damage to the roof, the interior and structural damage to the tower.
The church, which has twice been badly damaged by fire in 1881 and again in 2001, is an architectural masterpiece and one of the most important buildings at risk in the south east of England.
The above video and all images on this page have been shared with us by a local member of the public, Mr Peter Bullin. We are grateful to Mr Bullin who took the video in 1989. Peter worked in Sheerness Dockyard between 1972 and 2006 as a dock worker and, in particular, a driver of such things as forklifts, derricks and mobile cranes.
